New technology is moulding the business landscape, and we all need to take notice.

Whether you are a Momenta associate or one of our clients, you will, at some point, find yourself affected by the enormous changes taking place in workplaces around the globe.

These may not apply to your role - yet - but keeping abreast of wider trends influencing business and management will help your adaptability and employability long-term.

Our home and work lives are more blurred than ever and that’s due in part to the powerful computers we have by our sides at all times of the day and night.

These smart phones and watches mean we can tap into our emails, order a taxi, book a hotel room or flight and complete a complex spreadsheet – without leaving our sofas.

But now that we take this mobile tech for granted, things are starting to get interesting; and the world of work will never be the same again. Here are 6 reasons why:


1. ‘Anywhere’ working.

Now that tech enables people to work wherever they choose, businesses are responding. Flexible working has been around for a while, but the ability to be ‘always on’ from a coffee shop, airport or your kitchen, has opened up new opportunities (and potential danger areas) for companies.

The upside is the opportunity to be a modern employee brand, and therefore attract good workers. And there is evidence to suggest that productivity improves when people are able to work in more nimble ways. But there are pitfalls, of course, and data security is one area that needs to be carefully handled.

And it’s not just about being remote from the office; ‘Anywhere’ working also relates to those workplaces that encourage people to hot desk, improving collaboration and giving people responsibility to choose the environment that works best for them and the project they are working on.

Of course, not every office or call centre is a relevant candidate for such practices, and many of us are required to turn up at the same time, and to the same place every day. But times are changing and we predict that even the most conventional of work places will shift to some degree towards greater flexibility over the coming decade.


2. Robots

Some tasks that used to need humans to complete can now be efficiently carried out by tech-enabled devices: robots if you like. Voice activated technology is now common at both home and work, but the new generation of robots will have cognitive function too, detecting emotions and therefore adapting and reacting ‘intelligently’ to situations. Look out for this, for example, in call centres and customer centric functions – especially those that want to provide an around the clock and fast-responsive service.


3. Mobile Cloud Computing

This boosts productivity by giving people real-time access to company resources from anywhere and any device. Data storage, for example, is removed from the mobile device and handled remotely. The benefits of Cloud technology include increased productivity, higher employee satisfaction and loyalty, and better operational efficiency.


4. Microlearning

Technology is giving us fantastic resources for training in the digital workplace, helping workers become more competent and skilled. There are hundreds of new ways of accessing training resources often very inexpensively – and one upside is that workers are able to take more personal responsibility for their own development. This involves informal and contextual digital dexterity training delivered through videos, quizzes, text messages and games for example. The shorter and more immediate the training, the more useful it is. Good for the worker, good for business.


5. Silo-busters

These are tools that do just that: break down barriers to efficient working. They help people tackle problems, generate ideas and manage projects across work silos.  Social networks can play a role here, but other busters to look out for include idea jams, hackathons and collaborative work management programmes.


6. Video and production techniques

We can now package and deliver content such as sales presentations in powerful new ways, for example using video, podcasts and infographics. It makes us all more creative and effective. And that’s only the beginning. Immersive technologies, such as virtual and augmented reality, are making waves with consumers, and businesses are fast on the uptake. Think about how training and conferencing could be enhanced using natural gesture and simulation to bring situations to life.
